Here’s the story we’re digging the most today. In July 2018, a popular Appalachian Trail hiker was found dead in his tent in Florida. It looked as if he’d starved to death, but he had $3,500 on him, plenty of food, and he was only five miles from a major highway. Dozens of people had met the guy on the trail, which stretches up and down the entire East Coast. Everyone who met him seemed to like him and had great things to say about him, so naturally many were devastated to find out he’d died, especially under such weird circumstances.
But there was an additional problem: No one knew who the hell the guy really was, and they still don’t. Many Appalachian Trail hikers go by trail pseudonyms, and so did he — he called himself “Mostly Harmless,” and that’s the only name anyone knew him by. But although there are plenty of pictures of him and the Internet sleuthing community has been all over the case for two years….still, nobody knows who the guy is.
Maybe you can crack the case. Check it out on Wired:
