Yes, you read that right — Civil War, the one that ended in 1865. Helen Jackson was only 17 years old when she married a 93-year-old former Union soldier near the end of his life. She was his caregiver and he wanted the marriage so that after he died, she’d receive his pension. But she never applied for his pension after all. She died on Dec. 16.
